How the Final Grade Calculator Works

Our final grade calculator helps you determine the exact score you need on your final exam to achieve your target course grade. It uses a simple weighted average formula that accounts for your current grade and the weight of the final exam.

The Formula

The required final exam score is calculated as: Required Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. This formula rearranges the weighted average equation to solve for the unknown final exam score.

Letter Grade Reference

The calculator also shows you the letter grade equivalent of the required score, using the standard scale: A (93-100%), A- (90-92%), B+ (87-89%), B (83-86%), B- (80-82%), C+ (77-79%), C (73-76%), C- (70-72%), D+ (67-69%), D (63-66%), D- (60-62%), and F (below 60%).

Study Planning Tips

Once you know the score you need, you can plan your study time more effectively. If the required score is very high, focus on high-yield topics. If you only need a modest score, make sure you cover the basics to secure your grade without unnecessary stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Enter your current grade percentage, your desired final grade, and the weight of your final exam. The calculator uses the formula: Required Final = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight.
Can the required score be over 100%?
Yes, if your desired grade is too high relative to your current grade and the final exam weight, the required score may exceed 100%, meaning it is mathematically impossible to achieve that grade.
What if my final exam weight is 50%?
If your final is worth 50% of your grade, your current grade accounts for the other 50%. The final has a very large impact, so even a moderate improvement on the final can significantly change your course grade.
Does this work for weighted grades?
This calculator works for a two-component grade: coursework (current grade) and the final exam. For more complex weighted systems with multiple components, use a weighted grade calculator.
