Free Grade Calculator — GPA Calculator & Percentage to Grade Converter

OptiDrop's Grade Calculator is a free online tool for students. It offers two useful features: a percentage to grade converter (supporting both USA and India grading scales) and a GPA calculator that computes your cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale based on your course grades and credit hours.

Percentage to Grade Converter

Enter your percentage score and choose between the USA grading scale (A, B, C, D, F on a 4.0 scale) or the India grading scale (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, F on a 10-point scale). The tool instantly shows your letter grade, GPA equivalent, and a reference table for the full grading scale.

GPA Calculator (4.0 Scale)

Add your courses with the grade received (A through F) and the credit hours for each course. The calculator multiplies grade points by credits, sums them up, and divides by total credits to give your cumulative GPA. You can add as many courses as needed. All calculations happen instantly in your browser with no data uploaded anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying the grade points earned in each course by the credit hours for that course, summing all these values, and then dividing by the total number of credit hours. For example, if you earned an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course, your GPA would be (4.0x3 + 3.0x4) / (3+4) = 24/7 = 3.43.
On a 4.0 scale, a GPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered good, while 3.7 or above is excellent. A GPA of 3.0-3.49 is above average, 2.5-2.99 is average, and below 2.5 is below average. For graduate school admissions, most programs require a minimum GPA of 3.0. For competitive programs, a GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.
To convert a percentage to GPA on a 4.0 scale, a common formula is: GPA = (Percentage / 100) x 4. For example, 85% would be (85/100) x 4 = 3.4 GPA. However, different institutions use different conversion scales. Some use a more generous scale where 90-100% = 4.0, 80-89% = 3.0, 70-79% = 2.0, etc. Use this calculator for both percentage to grade and GPA calculations.
GPA (Grade Point Average) is typically calculated for a single semester or term, while CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average across all semesters. CGPA takes into account all courses taken throughout your academic program. In India, CGPA is often calculated on a 10-point scale, while in the US it is commonly on a 4.0 scale. Both represent the same concept of averaging grade points.
