Add Page Numbers to PDF — Free, No Upload Required

OptiDrop's PDF Page Numbering tool lets you insert page numbers into any PDF document in seconds. Whether you need to number pages for a thesis, report, legal document, or business proposal, our tool provides complete control over placement and formatting. Unlike online tools that require uploading your files, OptiDrop processes everything locally in your browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library — your PDFs are never uploaded to any server, making it completely safe for confidential documents.

How PDF Page Numbering Works

Our tool uses pdf-lib to load your PDF file, iterate through every page, and draw the page number text at your chosen position. The library embeds Helvetica font (built-in) so no external font files are needed. The numbers are drawn directly onto the PDF pages as vector text, which means they remain crisp and sharp at any zoom level — unlike rasterized solutions.

Customizable Options

Choose from six position options (top and bottom, left, center, right), three font sizes, and four number formats. Set a custom starting number for documents that continue from a previous section. The "Page 1 of N" format is especially popular for formal reports and academic papers where readers need to know the total page count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. You can place page numbers in six positions: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center, top right, or top left. Simply select your preferred position from the dropdown before adding numbers.
Absolutely. The Start Number field lets you begin numbering from any number you choose. For example, if you set the start number to 5, the first page will be labeled 5, the second page 6, and so on. This is useful for documents that continue from a previous section.
Completely safe. Your PDF never leaves your device. All processing is done locally in your browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. No data is uploaded to any server, making it 100% private and secure for confidential documents.
Four formats are supported: plain numbers (1, 2, 3), "Page" prefix (Page 1, Page 2), fraction format (1/N, 2/N showing total pages), and the full "Page X of N" format. Choose the one that best fits your document style.
