WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines minimum contrast ratios between text and background colors to ensure readability for users with visual impairments. AA level is the minimum standard, while AAA is the enhanced standard.
AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. AAA requires 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. AA is the legal minimum in many jurisdictions; AAA is the gold standard for maximum accessibility.
WCAG defines large text as at least 18pt (24px) regular weight, or at least 14pt (18.66px) bold weight. Large text has lower contrast requirements because it is easier to read at smaller ratios.
